SENIOR HURLING AND U21 CHALLENGE GAMES

On Friday next, May 17 Tipperary will play Waterford in a senior hurling challenge game in Davin Park, Carrick-on-Suir as part of a series of events in May and June to commemorate GAA founder and first President, Maurice Davin. The senior game is at 7.30pm and will be preceded by an under 21 hurling game also between Tipperary v Waterford at 6pm. As the championship season for both under 21s and seniors draws close both these games should be entertaining contests.  Admission is €10 and €5 for students and senior citizens with id. Juveniles are free. No county board annual passes can be used to gain entry. We would ask supporters to come early.

Westside column - May 18th 2013

posted 15 May 2013 02:56 by pro drominch

There’s no disguising the stand-out item locally from last weekend: Sarsfields crash out of the Mid in spectacular fashion. A second half tour de force from Drom and Inch swamps the multiple champions in a veritable score-fest.
Elsewhere three of the divisions are set up for knock-out action as the club series steps up a gear. For some relegation will be the bogey-man.
Then at inter-county level Lar and J.J. get off on a technicality while Tipperary go into camp this coming week with the Carrick tournament on Friday set to interrupt their session at Clonea.
At club level there’s no disputing that the Mid division is the power-base at the moment. I imagine you’d get long odds on a non-Mid side embracing ‘Dan Breen’ this coming autumn though Sarsfields’ stock will have dipped after they coughed-up their Mid crown  in sensational fashion last Sunday evening.
A few minutes into the action and Sarsfields were coasting in Templemore, principally on the strength of a flukey goal that may well be registered as an O.G. from Mikey O’Brien’s speculative lob. Drom looked stunned by that opening salvo as they slipped 1-3 to nil behind the reigning Munster, County and Mid title-holders.
Worrying times then for Drom but in their hour of need up stepped Seamie Callanan with a crucial reviving goal. They came close to a second shortly afterwards when Callanan again had the shot and it was David Butler who over-ran the rebound after Patrick McCormack made the save.
Crucially, though, Drom had stabilised matters and now we had a real humdinger on our hands. Marvellous end-to-end play with crisp striking and spectacular scores galore entertained the audience. Mikey Cahill was moved back to marshal county team mate, Callanan, as Sarsfields’ defence looked wobbly. The scoring rate was relentless with multiple contributors on both sides. Half time arrived with Sars’ just one ahead and the fans agog with anticipation after such a thrilling opening period.
And the spectacle never slackened in the second period. Drom got ahead and then Johnny Ryan endorsed their progress with a goal midway through the half; his lob from out near the sideline seemed to go all the way with Callanan distracting the goalie.
Blink at this match and you probably missed a score. Stephen Cahill, one of Sarsfields’ best on the night, flashed home an excellent goal as the ebb and flow of the match enthralled the viewers. However, in the final ten minutes or so it was Drom who played the encore. Two goals from David Butler and another from Joe Lupton perforated the Sarsfields’ defence and incredibly last year’s champs eventually lost by a dozen.
By any reckoning it was an extraordinary game - extraordinary in the end margin and extraordinary in the breathless ebb and flow of events. Okay, critics will point to the loose texture of the hurling as players failed to close down opponents but there was a flashy brilliance to much of the action that was a pleasure to watch.
Sarsfields were without Lar Corbett and full back, Kevin O’Gorman. Arguably the latter was the bigger loss on this occasion given the drift of events with Drom hitting five goals. There was no Johnny Enright either from last year’s winning format but I’m sure Sarsfields won’t be seeking excuses on this one; it was their second loss in the Mid this season.
On the Drom side there was a seven-man spread of scorers with David Butler bagging 2-2, Callanan on 1-5, Johnny Ryan on 1-3, Seamus Butler on 0-4 and Woodlock on 0-3. It was impressive gunning by any reckoning. But the credits weren’t confined to an in-form attack. In defence the likes of Eamon Buckley, Michael Costello and Kevin Butler caught the eye, the latter making some rallying surges outfield.
Sarsfields also had a seven-man contribution to the scoring and in fairness the end gap makes a mockery of their contribution to what was a knife-edge contest until the final ten minutes. I thought the runs of Stephen Cahill did most to rally their cause. Ronan Maher was another youngster to do more than his senior colleagues. Paudie Maher too hit a lot of ball though over-carrying and running into gridlock on a few occasions and in fairness David Collins did well on the county man including one great fetch and score in the second half.
So Sarsfields surrender their Mid trophy and must now take the scenic route through the various rounds of the county series in order to defend ‘Dan Breen’. Moycarkey and Holycross play the other Mid quarter-final next weekend with Loughmore and Upperchurch already through to the semis. Drom and Loughmore will be seen as the two best positioned sides to succeed Sarsfields.
Mind you nobody will fancy facing Sarsfields now in the first round of the county series, a round which will feature the sixteen teams who didn’t make their divisional semi-finals. There’s a pretty wide spectrum, standard wise, in the county at the moment, which I suppose is the starting premise of those who campaign for a reduction in senior numbers from the present thirty-two. Going from Golden to Templemore on Sunday last certainly underlined the disparity in standard between those seeking to avoid relegation at the bottom end and the cream of the crop at the top.
In fairness to Cashel K.C. and Cappawhite they served up a spirited contest with lots of earnest effort, though it must be admitted that the standard was low. When I tell you that Cashel led at half time by 1-4 to 1-3 you get a fair impression of what was on view. Compare that to the scoring extravaganza in Templemore.
There was a lot at stake in the Golden game and it was reflected in the earnestness of the clashes. Dylan Fitzell had an early goal for the King Cormacs but Timmy Cranley had a cancelling effort later in the half for Cappawhite. It stayed nip-and-tuck for the entire second half but Cappa’ finished the stronger, Tom Treacy setting up Matthew Kennedy for the winner. In fact Kennedy’s four points from play were a vital input to this win, for once taking the onus off Jerry O’Neill as the sole score-getter. Tom Treacy I feel is their stand-out player all season.
It’s one Cashel will feel they could have won. Unfortunately they now join Golden\Kilfeacle in round one of the county series where once more they’ll be looking over their shoulder at that old relegation bugbear. They need to win one game to survive and a lot will depend on the draw. For Golden, who have a meaningless game with Clonoulty still to play, the story is similar.
People have been asking about the relegation system for this season and next so I’ve been trying to untangle the process with a little help from those better informed than me. The system for this year is straightforward. Teams who qualify for their divisional semi-finals avoid the relegation trap. The remaining sixteen teams in the county play-off with the eight winners there going forward to round two of the county series and the eight losers entering the Seamus O’Riain Cup, which has relegation attached.
The set-up structure for next year is a bit less clear. In 2014 the thirty-two senior sides in the county will be divided into two groups of sixteen with that split being made on the basis of this year’s championship. The top sixteen will be free of relegation but who qualifies for that elite group? There seems to be a view that the divisional semi-finalists of 2013 will make up the top sixteen next year. Not so, it now appears. If you lose your divisional semi-final in 2013 then you’ll have to win a round in the county series to make next season’s top group.
Anyway the West has its semi-final pairings in place irrespective of the outcome of that final game between Clonoulty and Golden.  The semi-final line-up in mid-June will feature Kickhams against Eire Og Annacarty and Clonoulty versus Cappawhite.  On known form another Clonoulty\Eire Og final will be anticipated.
Up North they’re at quarter-final stage. Interestingly those old foes, Toomevara and Nenagh, have drawn each other, which means one of them will be heading into round one of the county series. Reigning North champions, Portroe, face Silvermines while the other two ‘quarters’ feature Templederry against Kildangan and Roscrea versus Borrisoleigh.
Down South there are a number of games still outstanding but Davins look the likely ones to miss out on the semi-finals. They are still pointless after three games.
Meanwhile Tipperary’s preparation for the championship opener against Limerick pushes ahead with a training camp this weekend at Clonea. They head off on Thursday but the training will be interrupted on Friday evening when the team faces Waterford in the Maurice Davin tournament at Carrick. The county U21s also face the Deise on the same bill of fare so that double programme should be well worth a visit on Friday.
Last weekend Tipperary played a ‘friendly’ against Cork to mark a pitch opening at Cloughduv. An early Tipp lead was eventually lost in a run of second-half goals with Michael Cussen reportedly causing our defenders some difficulty. Brendan Cummins had to pick five from his net as the locals won by that number of points in the end. ‘Bubbles’ O’Dwyer was our top point scorer but as in the league final there was no major to supplement the minors.
Meanwhile there’s been more fall-out from that league decider with a rule loophole meaning that neither J.J. Delaney nor Lar Corbett will be ineligible for their championship openers. A case taken by a Longford footballer exposed the rule glitch and there’s no doubt it’s a major embarrassment to Croke Park. Mind you I think they should be even more embarrassed at the manner in which the Kilkenny goalie is escaping censure.
For Corbett it may all be a meaningless sideshow anyway if those ribs don’t heal in time to face Limerick. At present he’s not being ruled out of the Limerick game but it certainly seems to be a race against time.
Corbett’s cause has earned some public support. I note Eamonn Sweeney in ‘The Sunday Indo’ rowing in on Corbett’s side seeing him as the victim. Mind you he undoes the good then by expressing his admiration for Kilkenny and his lack of fondness for Tipperary. ‘Something to do with the Tony Keady affair’. Really. Is there something of a rewriting of history here because I don’t recall the suspension of Keady having anything to do with the Tipp team or County Board? Anyway isn’t it a pathetic basis on which to ground a long-held prejudice.

Electric Ireland Munster Minor Football Championship Semi Final - Tipperary 0-11 Cork 0-8

Wasteful Tipp end up hanging on

By Diarmuid O’Flynn for the Irish Examiner newspaper

Tipperary 0-11 Cork 0-8

Tipperary remain on course for their first Munster MFC three-in-a-row after this deserved win over a very disappointing Cork side in Semple Stadium last night, though their supporters in the attendance of 1,227 were left chewing their fingernails in a nervous final six minutes or so as a rejuvenated Cork came in search of the equaliser. It was a poor game, very poor, neither side really impressing, though there was no disputing the better team on the night. On a perfect pitch, dry evening, Tipp led at the break by four points, 0-5 to 0-1, but it could have and should have been a lot more, eight very bad wides in that half.  Cork, meanwhile, were faring even worse, their lone point coming from raiding wing-back Sean White — a pale shadow of the side that had beaten Kerry in the opening round.

With the breeze now at their backs Cork needed a decent start to the second half — didn’t come. Instead it was Tipperary, led by captain and midfielder Colin O’Riordan (one) and silky corner-forward Alan Tynan (two), grabbing the initiative again for the home team, three unanswered points increasing the Tipp lead, 0-8 to 0-1, only five minutes into the half.  Finally, however, Cork woke up and with full-forward Michael Cahalane and super sub Aidan Moynihan leading the way, they began to eat into the Tipperary lead. By the first minute of injury-time they had it back to three points and with referee Sean Joy allowing play for another five minutes, Cork had attack after attack on the Tipp goal — all repelled.

The closest they came was a shot off the butt of the upright by corner-forward Michael Hurley and the impression at that stage was that if the game did go to extra-time then Cork would probably prevail. It didn’t happen, however, and it was only just that it didn’t because one of those Michael Cahalane points for Cork was clearly and indisputably wide.

It all left Tipperary manager Charlie McGeever a very happy man indeed, albeit more than a little relieved.  “It would have been a travesty if we’d lost that. We worked hard, but Cork were always going to come at us. They’re a big, strong, physical, hard-running side. Having seen them against Kerry our concern was about conceding goals. Cork are a goalscoring side, but I thought we defended exceptionally well against that.  “We have a very young side, two 15-year-olds starting this evening, Danny Owens, son of Johnny, and Alan Tynan. Our full-back, James Feehan, played a full match despite having dislocated his elbow only 10 days ago — that’s the dedication we’re getting from them. “I was disappointed in the wides, disappointed too in the point that was flagged for Cork when everyone saw it was well wide — that shouldn’t be happening in this day and age. That was a very poor decision and it put us under extra pressure, that point always loomed large as the game wound down.  “I thought Stephen Quirke’s point at the end was crucial, from out wide, another exceptional 15-year-old. We move on now to a Munster final, still developing, not yet at the level of the team that won the All-Ireland, but at least we’re getting another few months of football which is important.”

As for Cork, well, the players themselves were devastated, knew they had under-performed, leaving manager Ephie Fitzgerald at a loss to explain what had gone wrong.  “The first half we didn’t turn up at all. We took a risk in playing Peter Kelleher, not a lot of match practice, and we were under pressure in the middle of the field, gave them a good platform to attack us.  “I thought the lads battled back as best they could but Tipp are a big, strong, well-organised side. We left ourselves too much to do in the end but all credit to Tipp too for that, they never left us get into a rhythm. I wasn’t too happy with the ref, second half I felt there were a lot of dubious calls against us. That’s not to take from them, they were the better team on the night, but definitely we were on the wrong end of a few poor decisions.”

SENIOR MUNSTER CHAMPIONSHIP SEMI-FINAL

TIPPERARY 2-11  LIMERICK  0-13

Played in very blustery conditions in Martinstown Co. Limerick.  The Tipperary team included county minors Tara Kennedy and Mairead Teehan playing her first senior game. Limerick had the wind at their backs and scored two quick frees whilst Tipperary put two frees wide in the difficult conditions, but a great ball in found Amy Kennedy in space and she scored a great goal giving the Limerick goalie no chance.  Limericks Caoimhe Costello and Deidre Fitzpatrick were causing Tipperary some problems and scored great points to go five points up before Nicole Walsh scrambled in a goal after good work by Alice Fogarty. Tipperary added further points by Jill Horan who along with Mairead Teehan were doing great work in midfield and Nicole Walsh. The teams were even at half time Tipperary 2-03 Limerick 0-09.

Tipperary brought on Siobhan McGrath and Claire Kennedy on in the second half Nicole Walsh added a further point with a well taken free. However Limerick still were causing problems but with goalie Rita Burke who made a fine save at point blank range and Sabrina Larkin in fine form Tipperary contained the threat and started to control the game and only a fine stop by the limerick  goalie stopped  Tipperary from increasing their lead. Siobhan McGrath was causing Limerick some problems and pointed a great score with Brid Quinn scoring from an acute angle Tipperary's lead increased . Limerick came back with a couple of scores but with points from Claire Kennedy and  Nicole Walsh Tipperary closed out the game with a scoreline Tipperary 2-11  Limerick 0-13 .Tipperary will play Cork in the final.

Friday May 17 - A feast of Tipperary v Waterford hurling promised in Maurice Davin Park, Carrick-on-Suir.

posted 13 May 2013 06:06 by sites tipperary   [ updated 15 May 2013 14:23 ]

Davin Park, Carrick-on-Suir will host two very attractive hurling tournament games between Tipperary and Waterford on Friday next May 17. These games are part of the Maurice Davin commemoration events which will culminate in the unveiling of a statue of the GAA founder and first President in his native town on Saturday June 1.

The two games are Tipperary v Waterford in under 21 hurling at 6pm and in senior hurling at 7.30pm.

Waterford and Tipperary are expected to field two very strong sides for the senior game at 7.30pm. Both sides are only weeks away from Munster championship action and it will be the last opportunity to test out their form in advance of the major games ahead. There is huge rivalry between both counties in particular in the areas surrounding the banks of the Suir and in the town of Carrick itself where there are divided loyalties. The senior game will be preceded at 6pm by Tipperary and Waterford in under 21 hurling where some of the finest emerging talent from both counties will be on display as both counties also prepare for Munster championship action at this grade. A bumper crowd is expected to fill Davin Park for the occasion.

The senior game will be refereed by James Owens (Wexford) and the under 21 game by Paddy Ivors (Ballingarry).

Admission €10. Students & senior citizens €5 with identification. No passes except press passes accepted for this game.

Special parking and traffic arrangements will be in place for the game and supporters are encouraged to come early and obey stewards and Gardai.

Tipperary Ladies Gaelic Football Notes

Under 14C Munster Championship Final

Seven weeks after their round three game in the Munster Championship, Tipperary’s Under 14 team met Clare in the Munster “C” Championship Final in Sean Treacy Park, Tipperary Town on Saturday last.  Tipperary had met Clare earlier in the Championship in Kildysart, Co. Clare on the 2nd March.  They had a thrilling game then and Tipperary took a one point victory. Tipperary 5-6 Clare 5-5.

Everyone expected another thrilling game on this occasion and they were not disappointed.  There was a strong wind blowing and it took Tipperary a while to settle into the game.  Clare opened the scoring with one goal and two points within the first fifteen minutes of the game.  Tipperary kept trying to score and were rewarded in the twentieth minute with a goal by Kate Davey but Clare replied within minutes with another goal.  In normal time of the first half both teams added another point to their score lines but Tipperary got a vital goal from Lara O’Dwyer in injury time of the first half which left  the half time score - Clare 2-3 Tipperary 2-1.

The second half of the game started in as thrilling as a fashion as the end of the first half, Jean Kelly (Tipperary) scored a goal within two minutes of the recommencement and Tipperary took the lead for the first time in the game.  But Clare quickly replied with a goal and a point in the 34th minute of the game. Tipperary continued to dominate possession and by the 42nd minute, the sides were level.  Tipperary’s next point gave them back the lead in the forty third minute of the second half and they did not relinquish the lead again during the game.  Another Jean Kelly goal was to separate the teams even further in the 52ndminute to stretch Tipperary’s advantage to five points.  In the final six minutes of the game Clare scored two more points to Tipperary’s one but this was not enough to deny the home side the victory.  The final score Tipperary 4-7 Clare 3-6.

Afterwards, Tipperary’s Lara O’Dwyer accepted the player of the match award while Munster Vice-Chairman Anthony O’Brien presented the cup to the Tipperary joint captains Jean Kelly and Kirsty Crotty Ryan.

On the evidence of Friday night it was the blue and gold combination who seem to have made the better progress. Before the game Kilsheelan were out on the pitch early and warming up in an organised manner.  In contrast, the C.J.K. lads seemed to have difficulty in fielding a side if one were to go by the published team sheets.

Referee, Michael O’Donnell set the game in motion.  In the first few minutes we had both teams making errors, especially with their passing.  The third minute saw Sean Curran (M) yellow carded.  It looked then as if we were in for a very poor night of football.  We hoped that things might improve and happily they did.   In seven minutes Adrian Walsh opened the scoring with a point.  The fact that the scoreboard wasn’t in action, didn’t help the very small attendance.  Walsh was again in action in nine minutes when his long range effort from the sideline dropped into the top of the Mullinahone goal.  Gary Cronin opened Mullinahone’s account from a free in 12 minutes.  In the 18th minute, Kilsheelan mid-fielder Eoghan Ryan was seen to be in trouble and he was forced to retire.  In 25 minutes their centre back Adrian Maguire joined him on the side-line. Paul Maher and Kevin Larkin replaced the two casualties.  In between Danny Morrissey (M) had pointed, but sub Paul Maher and Adrian Walsh contributed two to Kilsheelan’s three points.  Sean Curran (M) was unlucky to hit an upright, but at the other end Alan Walsh saved well.  Michael McHugh (2) and Ian Coughlan added points for the K-K combination in the run-up to half time. H.T. score Kilsheelan/Kilcash 1-06, Mullinahone C.J.K. 0-02.

The second half began with no change.  M McHugh pointed a free for Kilsheelan.  During the evening McHugh’s free taking was excellent.  In the third minute, Sean Curran had to be assisted off with David Walzer replacing him.  Adrian Walsh and Pakie Larkin pointed for Kilsheelan and Niall Cronin replied from a free.  The game began to peter out. Ian Coughlan (K) saw yellow but Conor Murphy pointed for Kilsheelan.  Bill Maher went through on a solo run with goal on his mind but his effort was stopped and a 45 resulted which McHugh pointed.  Another long distance effort from the same player in 18 minutes was fielded by Walsh in the Mullinahone goal. By the 20th minute Kilsheelan led by 1-12 to 0-03.  Fair play to Mullinahone who kept battling away.  Two points from frees by Danny Morrissey brought Mullinahone to 0-05, but Kilsheelan had the last say with points from sub Eddie Sweeney and Michael McHugh.  In the last few minutes came Mullinahone’s best move of the game in which the ball was brought swiftly from one end of the field to the other, but alas, ended for them with Danny Morrissey shooting wide. Final score Kilsheelan/Kilcash 1-14, Mullinahone C.J.K. 0-05.

It was a night for handing out few plaudits, but for Kilsheelan Adrian Walsh did well in the first half, Paul Maher was busy when he came in and Michael McHugh kicked well.  For Mullinahone, Alan Walsh did well after a bad start, the ageless Kyran Vaughan had a good second half and Kevin Walzer and Danny Morrissey also showed up.  Both sides will no doubt improve for the other games ahead.
