Premier punch puts Cork on the canvas
Tipperary 1-10 Cork 0-09
By Fintan O’Toole for the Irish Examiner newspaper
Tipperary’s ambitions of retaining their All-Ireland MFC crown remain intact after they staved off the determined challenge of Cork in an engaging Munster semi-final clash in Páirc Uí Chaoimh last night. With several survivors from the side that claimed national success last September, Tipperary required all that experience to emerge with the honours in front of 2,221 patrons. Victory also set up a final showdown on July 8 against a Kerry team they defeated in the opening round.
The critical score in this tight tie arrived just after the interval. Only two minutes had elapsed in the second-half when Tipperary’s John Martin punted in a cross from the left wing and the towering figure of Philip Quirke availed of the new square ball rule to steal in and fist the ball to the net. That proved the only green flag of the game and was the centrepiece of a fine performance by the Moyle Rovers man who posed a significant threat throughout for the Cork rearguard.
Quirke was helped in the attacking department by John McGrath who pulled the strings from centre-forward and scored four points, divided evenly between open play and placed balls, while Ian Fahey, unable to start due to an injury, made a massive impact when introduced at the break. He kicked two brilliant long-range points and enhanced Tipperary’s prowess in claiming aerial possession. "Coming down to Cork and beating a well-prepared team is massive," enthused Tipperary manager David Power afterwards. "Ephie Fitzgerald had them in great shape and they were super fit. It was probably the toughest game we’ve played over the two years. It’s a pity for Cork that they’re out as I think they’re one of the top eight teams in the country. It wasn’t a pretty performance and we can play better football. Cork restricted us though."
Defeat here confirmed Cork’s exit from this season’s minor championship and after thrashing Limerick in their opening fixture, it was their misfortune to be handed such a tricky assignment here. They battled furiously throughout. Corner-back Stephen Cronin gave an excellent defensive display in nullifying the threat of Colman Kennedy, Ian Maguire was an energetic force at midfield while Kevin Crowley made several rampaging runs forward. Substitutes Aidan Moynihan and Killian McIntyre shone when drafted on at half-time in improving Cork’s attacking play.
But Cork were left to rue their shooting in front of goal as they amassed 13 wides over the hour that included three misses from scoreable close-range frees. The close attentions of the Tipperary rearguard ensured the Cork forwards never received any clearcut goal-scoring opportunities in open play and their best chance to raise a green flag came with last kick of the game from the penalty spot. Yet Brian O’Driscoll’s injury-time shot was expertly palmed away by Tipperary netminder Evan Comerford, whose accurate kickouts and composed fielding were frequent facets of the play.
The teams were locked together at 0-5 apiece at the break. Tipperary had made the early running with Steven O’Brien and Martin giving them a foothold in midfield, and they led 0-5 to 0-3 by the 23rd minute. However Cork made an encouraging revival before the break with Killian O’Connor and Cathal Vaughan ensuring parity by half-time. Tipperary almost found the net late on when Kennedy lobbed in a cross but O’Brien flashed a shot wide at the far post. The clashes between the respective sets of players in the tunnel as they headed for the dressing-rooms indicated the feisty nature of the action at that juncture.
Tipperary received an early second-half fillip when Quirke found the net but Cork moved back into contention. Moynihan and McIntyre both looked menacing in attack which was reflected in the white flags they raised while Maguire galloped forward to lob another shot between the posts. With ten minutes remaining they were still in contention as they trailed by 1-8 to 0-8. However Tipperary, principally through the twin attacking forces of Fahey and Quirke that contributed a combined total of four points in the second-half, were always able to stay ahead on the scoreboard. Two points was the smallest deficit that Cork ever faced and the sense grew during the second-half that they needed a goal to overhaul their opponents. But a Tipperary defence where James Feehan, Kevin Fahey and Bill Maher produced strong second-half showings held out to triumph.

Prior to 2012, Kerry’s last defeat in a first round Munster Minor Football Championship game was in March 2002 when they lost to Tipperary by 2-11 to 2-9 at Kilmallock. Kerry avenged that defeat with a 3-16 to 2-6 win over Tipperary in the 2002 Munster Final played at Semple Stadium Thurles.

Limerick have lost 7 of their last 8 matches in the Munster Minor Football Championship dating back to 2008. Their only success in that time was a 3-10 to 2-4 victory over Waterford at Kilmallock in the first round in 2010.
Dating back to 2005, Waterford have won 1 of their last 17 games in the Munster Minor Football Championship.

There’s no disputing the headline item this week: Lar is back. His departure last February was a bombshell and now his return is equally dramatic. Lar, it seems, doesn’t do predictability. The announcement of his second coming has certainly reinvigorated the scene after the disappointment of the league. The buzz has returned to Tipperary hurling – and in good time just ahead of the championship opener.
Otherwise there was plenty of club activity at the weekend with reigning champions scrambling draws in three divisions.
The press announcement from the County Board on Sunday last was typically formal. They were ‘pleased to announce the return of Lar Corbett to the Tipp SH panel’. In the nature of these announcements there was to be no longwinded explanation. Lar had been preoccupied in past months ‘developing his business activities and is now once again in a position to give the necessary commitment to being a member of the panel’. That was it, curt and concise. Lar would ‘recommence training immediately’.
There’s no doubt it’s welcome news that will put pep in the step of Tipperary fans everywhere. Coming at a time when Seamus Callanan is showing a return to finer form and ‘Bonner’ Maher is back playing ball once again the uplift in mood is palpable.
Mind you it will hardly quell the rumour mill which has been fascinated by this entire story. Retiring for ‘business reasons’ is so clichéd nowadays that everybody believes it’s simply code for something more juicy. So the conspiracy theorists have a field day. And in this underworld of nod and wink Tommy Dunne has been the victim, the perceived villain of the peace. One wonders will Lar’s willing return now go some way to counteracting the nastier insinuations.
There’s no doubt Lar’s return is a major boost to the team and, I suspect, an item of huge relief for the management also. The goal-machine that was Corbett in recent seasons gave our attack an exciting dimension one that others feared. The lightning pace, silky touch and deadly finishing was enough to give seasoned defenders the wobbles. In full flow Lar could light up any arena, so there’s no doubt hurling in general is richer for his return.
Of course the problem now will be to calm expectations. Our shortage of goals during the recent league series has been well noted but it will be asking a lot for Lar to instantly turn on that particular tap once again. He’s played no competitive hurling since the county semi-final on October 2 last so one can hardly expect an instant impact now on his return.
One assumes the Limerick game comes too soon for Lar to play any significant part in the action. A more practical target must be a potential Munster semi-final on June 24 should we get over Limerick. Hopefully by August, when the business end of the championship kicks in, he should be revving up to peak performance. Anyway it’s great to have him back. His career and contribution deserves a tidier encore than the events of the past six months.
Meanwhile a Tipperary team travelled to Clonlara in Clare on Sunday evening for a field opening, which the visitors won by a single point. It was a makeshift Tipperary side on duty but perhaps the most noteworthy contribution was from Seamus Callanan who was credited with 1-8, 1-3 from play. Since his comeback from injury Callanan has struggled with his form but last weekend seems to have marked a return to sharpness, which is timely news indeed. He was the star show it seems on Saturday night also in Drom’s one-point win over Loughmore in the Mid. A fortnight out from the championship opener this is indeed welcome news.
In general the story on the injury front appears to be positive with the walking wounded on the way back to full health. Donagh Maher played for Tipp on Sunday night while Paul Curran was in action for Mullinahone down South on Saturday. Patrick ‘Bonner’ Maher is also back in action so the omens are good as we count down to the Limerick game. Seamus Hennessy too has returned for Kilruane though it appears he’s a long way off returning to county action.
There was plenty of action on the club front last weekend with games in all divisions and some interesting outcomes. I the Mid reigning champions, Loughmore, fell one short of Drom\Inch, the form team in the division, while in the North, South and West all the defending champions had to do with draws.
Up North Portroe pulled off a big result with a draw against Toomevara. Liam Sheedy is this year coaching his native club and clearly doing a useful job. I saw them earlier in the county league and they seemed well organised and spirited as you’d expect from a team under Sheedy’s baton.
Incidentally the same Liam Sheedy is a busy man these days. After the 2010 All Ireland he retired because of work commitments – now where have we heard that before? – but this year apart from his home club he’s finding time for a role with Newmarket in Clare as well as involvement in Tyrone. In his spare time then he earns a few quid – quite a few according to recent reports on pundit payments – as an RTE analyst. He’s a busy man alright.
Down South at the weekend Carrick Swans came close to a major coup against Mullinahone before an Eoin Kelly pointed free rescued a draw for the reigning champions. It appears to have been a lively game at Kilsheelan. Paul Kelly was sent off for a second yellow and Mullinahone came from behind to save the day.
It was a bad weekend all round for divisional champions with Clonoulty in the West having to salvage a draw against Kickhams. After losing to Annacarty and Cappawhite in previous rounds you wouldn’t get too many backers for Kickhams in this one. However, these local derbies often take on a life of their own which at times throws logic out the window.
It’s amazing how Kickhams always seem to find something special when they face Clonoulty and previous form lines are rendered redundant. They did it again this time forcing Clonoulty to come from behind to salvage a draw. I’ve heard a few reports on the game speak highly of David Butler’s input to the Kickhams effort.
The game had three players sent off. John Devane, Clonoulty, and Damien McGrath, Kickhams, were two unlikely candidates for red cards, I would have thought. Clonoulty’s Conor Ryan was the third player to see red. Clonoulty also lost Thomas Butler to what appeared to be a recurrence of that knee injury which sidelined him last year. It all puts the West champions into an awkward position because they’ll now be without their suspended players for the semi-final. It’s been a troubled start to Clonoulty’s season.
In the other West game at the weekend Eire Og got the verdict on Cappawhite after a goalkeeping blunder proved very costly near the end. There’s now one important game left in the West with Cashel to face Aherlow, after which the knock-out pairings will become clearer.
In the Mid at the weekend I saw Boherlahan rescue their season with a spirited display against Holycross. As with all games the big wind that blew at the Ragg was a major factor. Holycross were 1-7 to 0-3 up at half time, Boherlahan failing to score from play in that spell. Amazingly Holycross failed to score at all in the second half as Boherlahan rallied strongly to eventually win by three. Goalie, Joe Ryan, hit two massive points from frees for Boherlahan, the second from about thirty yards from his own goal.
A bit like Kickhams and Clonoulty in the West there’s little love lost between Boherlahan and Holycross in the Mid so this was a significant one for both teams. The result puts Holycross out of the Mid championship and earns Boherlahan a shot at Sarsfields in a quarter-final.
In the other Mid game at the Ragg on Sunday Bracken’s hammered Upperchurch to top the group. The ‘Church were without James Barry but the Templemore side was minus Shane Bourke so you’d expect some cancelling of the losses there. Shane Bourke seems to be out of the reckoning for Tipperary too because of that injury, which is disappointing at a time when others are returning.
The upshot of these Mid games now is that Drom and Brackens are through to the semi-finals while the quarter-final pairings are Boherlahan v. Sarsfields and Loughmore v. Upperchurch. Both Moycarkey and Holycross are out of the divisional race and now await the county open draw.
A lot of games are now played in all four divisions but very little is sorted out apart from the Mid. In the West for example all teams are still in the race for divisional honours with Kickhams’ fate dependent on that final game between Cashel and Aherlow. I suppose you could argue that the ‘real’ championship has yet to begin in most divisions.
Anyway the club business now takes a breather as that Munster championship opener takes centre stage. Team selection and related matters will be the hot topic as we gear up to face the Shannonsiders. All of which is matter for next week.
Well done to Inane Rovers who won the North u-16 B football final beating Kildangan 1.09 to 1.05, We wish Inane Rovers the best of luck in the County Semi-finals.

weekend Templemore defeated Moyne Templetouhy 4-13 to 1-8 and Ardfinnan
defeated Upperchurch 2-10 to2-9. Sunday evening last in New Inn Templemore and
Ardfinnan contested the final of this competition. After a hard fought battle
in which the lead changed many times Templemore pulled away in the last ten
minutes to win on a score of 5-12 to 5-4. Our county chairman Tommy Campbell
was present to present the Junior League Cup to the winning captain Catherine
Scanlon. Thanks to Christy and the Rockwell Rovers club for having their field
in splendid order and to Michael Duffy for refereeing.
Junior B
Boherlahan did battle with Ballyporeen in the first
semi-final in Munroe on Sunday evening and came out the winner 4-13 to 3-6. In
the other semi-final on Saturday evening Clonmel Commercials failed to field
out against Thurles Sarsfields.
Junior C

score line of 4-20 to 1-3. Galtee will now take on the winner of the second
semi-final between Capppawhite B and Cahir B fix for Friday 18th May
time and venue to be arranged.

Under 16 finals
Well done to all the clubs that played in our under 16
championships to Ann Slattery,Karl Mc Carthy and the fixtures committee for having
all the games finished on time. A total of fifty eight games were played.
Cahir retained their under 16A crown for the fourth year in
a row when they defeated Clonmel Commercials in the final. Moyle Rovers were
their opponents in the semi-final and Templemore had a four points lose to
Commercials in the other semi-final. Both semi-finals were well contested and
the future of all four clubs looks bright.
Aherlow retained their under 16B title when they had a good
win over Cappawhite on Sunday last. Fethard
and Brian Borus were the two defeated semi-finalist.
Our C champions are Mullinahone who were much too strong for
Moycarkey on a score line of 4-13 to 1-3. These two teams defeated Arravale
Rovers and Ardfinnan in the semi-finals.
On Sunday evening last in Littleton Sliabh Na mBan and
Upperchurch contested the D final with Donal Leahy in charge of the whistle.
For some reason or other Upperchurch fielded without some of their stronger
players and so it was an easy victory for the girls from the South on a score
line 5-8 to 1-2. We wish all girls sitting Junior cert Leaving cert or third
level exams the best if look.
The County under 14 panel will travel to St Lomans G.A.A
club in Mullingar on Saturday next for the National under 14 blitzes.
Ardfinnan played out their third game of the Championship recently. Ballylooby were the opposition and mercifully the skies stayed clear throughout the game in Ardfinnan. It was a low scoring game, the first half being very even. Ardfinnan's full backs John Condon, Darragh O Leary and Conor Gallagher were impressive and Alan Walsh(0-4) was doing well and having a great tussle with strong full back Dylan Smith, who played very well in both halves. Alan had to come off midway through the second half due to a blow to the shin, which meant his team mates had to up their games to hold onto the lead as Ballylooby pushed hard for scores. In the second half the crucial score was a James Condon goal for The Maroons. James deserved it for his constant high workrate. Also very good for Ardfinnan were Michael Cunningham and centre-fielder supreme Oisín Ryan. Others on the team/panel were Conor Burke, Brett Adams, Darragh O Brien, Seán Doyle, Joseph Betts, Luke O Brien and Emmet Cowan. It's a pity that the maroons are out after losing only one match.... but the 6th class boys can go out with many fond memories of wearing the school colours proudly.
Best for Ballylooby were Paddy Doyle who gave a great display at midfield, Ben O Regan who switched to goals in the 2nd half and stopped many an attack and Captain Colin Gorman who led by example throughout.
COUNTY HURLING FINALS
Our County Hurling Finals will take place in Semple Stadium on Thursday/FridayJune 7th/8th. Please take note of this date.
RESOUNDING VICTORY FOR CAPPAWHITE N.S. BY THE CAPTAIN FRASER ALLEN The hurling match in our school was played on Friday 21st of April at 1.30pm. Both teams played very well and put in a great sporting effort; it was played with a good mentality and always played fast and with a good, skilful pace. It only took two minutes for the scoring to start with a great point from Brendan Murphy. All the team put in a great effort. Sadly one of our best players Brendan Murphy had to be substituted off with a leg injury. The second half came and with Rossmore hot on our heels with a two point deficit. We started to pull away from our opposition winning by ten points, but we couldn’t write them off with a superb goal from their corner forward In the end we were slightly too strong for the opposing team Rossmore. With the help of our coaches and teachers, we were victorious. We couldn’t have played without our very generous referee John Barry who refereed the game to a high standard. All in all it was a great match and we hope to meet them again in the future.
